76th annual American Legion Pilgrimage

SPRINGFIELD — The 76th annual American Legion Pilgrimage to the Tomb of Abraham Lincoln will be Feb. 12 in Springfield. The event will be hosted by Springfield Post 32, Auxiliary Unit 32 and Sons of the American Legion Squadron 32.

National Commander Clarence E. Hill of Florida, National President Rita Navarrete, the LeChapeau National of the 8 & 40 Janet Christiansen, SAL National Commander Mark Arneson, Illinois Department Commander William J. Flanagan, Department President Julie Moore, LeChapeau Departmental Ruth Elzinga and Detachment Commander Mark Melone will attend and participate in activities. Additionally, many other Legion, Auxiliary, 8 & 40, S.A.L., and state and local dignitaries will be in attendance to honor President Abraham Lincoln on this very special day.

The commemoration begins Feb. 11 from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. with an open house at Springfield Post 32, 1120 Sangamon Ave., Springfield. A free shuttle will run continuously between the Hilton Hotel and Post 32 from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The activity schedule is as follows: 8 a.m., American Legion Auxiliary breakfast honoring National President Rita Navarrete, Hilton Springfield Capitol Room; 8:30 a.m., American Legion breakfast honoring National Commander Clarence E. Hill, Hilton Springfield, Prairie Room; 10 a.m., Pilgrimage departs Hilton Springfield for journey to Abraham Lincoln’s Tomb; 10:30 a.m., ceremonies and wreath placing from inside Mr. Lincoln’s Tomb, Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield; and 12:30 p.m., Lincoln Commemoration Luncheon with distinguished guests and National Commander Clarence E. Hill of Florida as the keynote speaker, in the Hilton ballroom.

The Princeton High School Tigers beat the Rock Falls Rockets Wednesday 66-55 during sectional play at Byron. The Tigers will now play the undefeated Winnebago Indians at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the sectional championship.
