Phyllis Finfgeld

HENRY — Phyllis Pierce Finfgeld, 79, of Henry died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.

Phyllis was born Jan. 6, 1931, in Mannboro, Va., to Rev. Albert A. and Helen Cox Pierce. She married Richard K. “Moby” Finfgeld on July 12, 1953, in Inwood, Long Island, New York. He survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Brenda (Rod) Turner of Johnston, Iowa, and Deborah (Dave) Connett of Columbia, Mo.; two grandchildren, Lauren and Erin Turner of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Virginia (Norman) DeGrishe of Sun City Center, Fla., Pat Jeffers of Tulia, Texas, and Ruth Farley of Brandon, Fla.; and one brother, Albert A. (Mary) Pierce Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev.

She attended grade school in Elizabeth, N.J., and high school in Schenectady, N.Y. She was a graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., where she sang in the University Choir and graduated with a degree in vocal music performance. Her senior recital included numbers in Italian, German, French and English.

She received a master’s degree in elementary education from Bradley University in Peoria.

She was employed as Director of Religious Education at the First Methodist Church in Streator. She gave private piano lessons and judged vocal music contests.

She then taught vocal music and first grade in the Henry Grade School for 25 years. Later, she was employed in the pre-press department of M&D Printing in Henry.

Phyllis was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma education sorority and both the Marshall-Putnam and Illinois Retired Teachers Associations.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Henry for more than 50 years. She was member of the church choir and sang solos for more than 30 years. She was also an elder of the church and a member of the Women’s Association.

She also served on the board of the Henry Public Library.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Henry. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gavin Finefield officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Private family inurnment will follow at Henry Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Henry Public Library.

The Calvert & Johnson Memorial Home, Henry, is in charge of arrangements.
