Safety program sponsors neededBy Donna Barker - dbarker@bcrnews.comPRINCETON — SafetyPup is headed to Princeton with a message for area children. On Friday, Princeton Police Chief Tom Root said SafetyPup and his message is geared for young children ages 5 through 12 and is provided through the National Child Safety Council. This is the Princeton Police Department’s 10th year to bring SafetyPup to Princeton. Root said the Princeton Police Department and SafetyPup are expected to visit about 950 children in both public and parochial schools in Princeton this spring. More than 4,100 pieces of educational safety materials will be distributed, he said. The SafetyPup program covers all kinds of safety issues for children, including bike safety, Stranger Danger, and drug and alcohol awareness and prevention, as well as other safety issues within the home, outdoors and at school, Root said. “This is an important program for our community,” Root said Friday. “We have always been proactive, especially when it comes to safety and our kids. The more we can get these programs into our schools and communities, the more we can make it a safer world for our kids.” Local sponsorship is being sought to help bring SafetyPup to Princeton. The SafetyPup program, which began in 1955 in MIchigan, is the world's largest and oldest nonprofit organization dedicated entirely to the safety of children. The organization states its reaches an estimated 16 million children each year. Comment on this story at www.bcrnews.com.
