Rotary Club releases scholarship information

PRINCETON — The Princeton Rotary Club has released information about the 2010 Swan-Eickmeier Scholarship Program.

Four $1,000 non-renewable scholarships will be awarded to Princeton High School graduating seniors pursuing a two- or four-year college degree. The scholarship funds must be applied directly to tuition, room and board, fees or textbooks. Payment will be made directly to students in two installments during the year following graduation.

The criteria for students applying for the scholarship will include the intent to complete a college degree, enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited college or university, and enrollment as a student at PHS for at least one academic year prior to graduation. Selection will be based on candidate’s academic achievement, extracurricular and community activities, letters of recommendation, and a 500-word essay about how Rotary service and ideals will play a role in their life.

“This marks the 10th year the Princeton Rotary Club will be offering scholarships,” said Judson Lusher, chairman of the scholarship committee. “The Swan-Eickmeier Scholarship is another way for members of Rotary to show their interest and support in the education of Princeton’s youth.”

“We take great pride in offering a scholarship program for Princeton High School students,” said Bud Bulthuis, Princeton Rotary Club president. “It provides us the opportunity to continue our mission of helping the young people of Princeton, while also assisting them financially in furthering their education.”

“The scholarships are funded via the various fundraising events conducted by the Princeton Rotary Club, including its annual charity auction,” Lusher said. “The Rotary Club also makes contributions to other organizations and programs throughout the community.”

Founded in 1905, Rotary International is the world’s first service club organization. Today, Rotary flourishes worldwide with 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Its members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under the motto Service Above Self.

PHS seniors may pick up a Swan-Eickmeier Scholarship application in the high school guidance office from counselor Deb Dullard. Application must be received by April 9. Notification of scholarship award winners will occur in May.
