Proud to be a Bureau County officer

My job can be tremendously rewarding in a variety of aspects; it is like most things in life in that the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. I chose law enforcement because I enjoy the daily diversity this profession offers. Don’t misunderstand; there are certain tasks and complaints which seem to be routine based on the season, shift or even the lunar phases. Some officers might say they chose this career for the adrenaline rush, immediate job satisfaction or perhaps the coffee and donuts. I doubt any of us entered into it so that we could corral domestic animals on lonely highways or referee family disputes donning polyester uniforms and Batman style utility belts. Personally, I could finish my career without ever having to witness another traffic death, abused elder or victimized child. In law enforcement, we are also subject to a political environment that is unlike many other professions. That being said, each one of us chose this profession and all of the negative aspects that go along with it.

Recently, I was having lunch with my shift at a local restaurant in Princeton when a man approached our table. I looked at the other officers’ expressions and tried to determine if they knew him. As it turned out, this man, who simply identified himself as Tom, was a stranger to everyone at our table. We tried to be polite but secretly assumed he was going to complain about a recent incident or ask a legal question. Tom addressed us collectively, stating that he admired the work we did and commented that law enforcement officers were all too often under-appreciated. He went on to say thank you and informed us that he was taking care of our bill. Each one of us thanked him and assured him that taking care of the bill was not necessary. He then said thank you for what you do, walked up to the cashier and paid it. I went up to the man and asked him his last name, thanking him again. I would have liked to send this letter directly to him; unfortunately, I have not found his name listed locally.

Our pay is somewhat less than other area departments; we do not always have the best equipment, and often assistance from other officers is not readily available. That being said, I am proud to be an officer at the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office. I enjoy working with the other officers on my shift; we protect each other, respect each other and laugh at each other. I want “Tom” to know that while the meal was appreciated, his time and compliment meant so much more to each one of us. Thank you for reminding us that one of the greatest benefits in our profession is the opportunity to meet and interact with the good people who reside in our community, but also for those who are passing through.
