Help sought in solving February crimes

PRINCETON — The Bureau/Putnam County Crime Stoppers is asking for public assistance in solving recent thefts and burglaries in western Bureau County.

Crime Stopper Commander Jim Shipp recently reported the Bureau County Sheriff’s Department responded in February to several vehicle burglaries in Mineral. Three vehicles were entered between the late hours of Feb. 12 and the early morning hours of Feb. 13 by unknown person or persons, A purse containing credit cards and several music discs were taken. During the investigation, authorities learned several vehicles were also burglarized in nearby Annawan.

On Feb. 14, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Department responded to New Bedford for the theft of a black 2004 Pontiac Grand Am, which was stolen in the early morning hours. The keys were left in the ignition of the car. The vehicle was recovered Feb. 17 in Henry.

On Feb. 15, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Department responded to rural Sheffield in reference to a theft of a 60,000 BTU L.B. White heater from a shed.

On Friday, Bureau County Sheriff John Thompson said he does not believe the February crimes are related. Authorities have some very distinct impressions and evidence which have led to that belief, he said.

If the public has any information about these crimes, they are asked to call the Bureau/Putnam County Crime Stoppers at (800) 939-6929. People may remain anonymous when giving their information. Crime Stoppers will pay a cash reward up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.

The Bureau/Putnam County Crime Stoppers does have a Web site, explaining the outreach of the not-for-profit organization. According to the Web site, Crime Stoppers operates on the premise that for most every crime committed, someone other than the offender knew
about the crime or might have seen or overheard something suspicious.

Since its inception in 1994, the Bureau/Putnam County Crime Stoppers has solved 51 crimes, made 68 arrests and paid $3,900 in awards.
