Breese punches state ticket

Breese Central, who beat Princeton along the way this season, punched its ticket to Peoria with a 53-42 win in Tuesday’s Frankfort 2A Sectional.

David Wiegmann scored 22 points to lead the Cougars (30-3) into Friday’s 2A state semifinal in Peoria Friday night against Peoria Manual (22-7). Breese rallied from a 21-11 deficit to beat Princeton 50-37 in the Feb. 13 Riverton Shootout.

At Joliet: Pat Miller had 22 points, and Jamie Adams added 21 to lead top-ranked Hales Franciscan (28-2) to win a 70-55 win over Elmhurst Timothy Christian.

At Springfield: Ben Jones scored 29 points to lead Robinson (25-5) past Decatur St. Teresa. Illinois signee Meyers Leonard added 21 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots for Robinson.

Class 1A

At Normal: Joel Learnard had 29 points and 12 rebounds Tuesday to lead No. 1-ranked Catlin Salt Fork to a 59-38 win against Peoria Heights at Redbird Arena.

At Jacksonville: Kendall Echols scored 12 points to lead Madison to a 48-45 win over Lewistown. Joe Jugovic scored 25 points for Lewistown (24-7), which was seeking its third straight state finals berth.

At Salem: Justin Matyi had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Sesser-Valier to a 53-44 overtime win over Woodlawn, the 2009 state runner-up.

At DeKalb: Little Ten champ Newark came up one stop short of reaching the state finals for the second straight year, falling to Lanark Eastland 70-57 at the Convocation Center Tuesday.

Tony Dunlap led Eastland with 36 points. Kyle Anderson paced Newark with 19 points.
