OK ... don’t laugh. I’ve attempted a lot of activities in my life, but this was one thing that I always wanted to do. After all, thousands of people do it, and everybody makes it look so simple. About three years, I took up the game of golf.

Most of you know I grew up on a farm north of Princeton. By today’s standards, it was a small farm, where my grandparents grew corn and soybeans and raised a few head of cattle, some hogs, sheep, ponies, chickens and of course, my grandfather’s beloved Dalmatian dogs.

I couldn’t wait to get inside my house the other day, where the only sign of another hot, sultry summer was seen through the windows. That’s right. The summer sun was beating down hard, and the humidity was nearly 100 percent. But inside ... aaahhh ... yes, inside my air conditioned home, complete with ceiling fans in every room, I was oblivious to the summer.

OK, it’s our nation’s birthday. The majority of us will be celebrating in grand style ... After all, with 234 candles on our country’s cake this year, we should strive to make this another wonderful party.
