Legion meeting
PRINCETON — The Bureau County Historical Society will present Oakland Speaks V in Princeton’s Oakland Cemetery on Sept. 19.
PRINCETON — In support of KidLit 2010, scheduled for Sept. 25, Princeton Public Library is filling its schedule with KidLit friendly programming.

SHEFFIELD — Sheffield resident and Princeton High School teacher Margaret Lind DeVenney has self-published her first work of fiction through Authorhouse Publishing.

With less than two weeks left until Grandparents Day on Sept. 12, third-graders at Lincoln Elementary School in Princeton have already gotten a head start in putting their writing and drawing skills to work as they describe their grandparents and what they mean to them.
WYANET — It is time for Raymond A. Sapp Memorial Township Library’s programing to start up again. The title for the initial 2nd Thursday@the Library is “This Land is Your Land: Woody Guthrie and the Great American Folksong.” At 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9, singer/songwriter Bucky Halker will visit and entertain those in attendance with Woody Guthrie folksongs.

Fundraiser set
PRINCETON — Gary and Bea Coates have been named the grand marshals for this year’s Homestead Festival.
GULFPORT, Miss. — Navy Seaman Anthony R. Heider, the son of Lu Ann Heider of LaSalle and Dale Heider of North Port, Fla., recently began an almost five-month deployment to Afghanistan while assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133, homeported at Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, Miss.
CHICAGO — Lynn Voss of Moorseville, N.C., the granddaughter of Marie Stabler of Buda, joined 16,000 other walkers as she participated for her seventh year in the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure in Chicago Aug. 5-8.

Slingsby and Liebhart are flight attendants who volunteered their time to help take the 186 area World War II veterans on an honor flight to Washington, D.C., to view the World War II monument. The contribution was made as an expression of gratitude from Martin and the members of Princeton American Legion Post 125.
Jon Yaklich, 10, of Princeton and his horse, Panner’s Pride, at 31 years of age, competed at the recent 2010 Illinois State Fair Jr. Horse Show in Springfield July 28 through Aug. 1. There were more than 1,000 entries at the state show, with Jon placing sixth out of 56 in showmanship at halter. Jon is the son of Gary and Julia Yaklich of Princeton.
PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Schools Foundation will be hosting the annual tours of Princeton High School from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 11 during the Homestead Festival weekend.
DOVER — The Eckhoff and Schaeffer clans held their annual family reunion Aug. 8 at the Dover Church Meeting Hall. Members caught up on the latest family news, met the newest babies and took group photos.

OGLESBY — Descendants of Domingo and Yndalezia (Garcia) Blanco came together on July 17 at the Elks in Oglesby to celebrate 100 years since the last members of the family left Asturias, Spain, and arrived at Ellis Island.

PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Library will present Illinois Inventors, as performed by actor Terry Lynch of Histories for Kids Inc., at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the library, 698 E. Peru St.
LADD — The Ladd Public Library Book Club will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 13, one week later than usual due to Labor Day, to discuss “For One More Day” by Mitch Albom.

Tracy Merkel (left) and Justin Hamm (right) receive a $1,700 check from Princeton Moose Lodge Governor Kent Harmon following a July 30 benefit sponsored by the Lodge. Merkel and Hamm lost everything in an early morning fire in July that prompted the Moose Lodge to arrange a benefit to help replace some of their losses. The two expressed gratitude to all in the community who participated.
