So, I’m curious ... why do we call it the Bureau County Fair Pageant if a person from another county is eligible to participate? Have the rules always included this multitude of other counties? Seems unfair to our actual “hometown” girls to have to compete with people who don’t even call this area home. It should mean something when you win that title ... you live here, work here, are educated here, worship here, contribute here ... HERE in our county of BUREAU. Thus, the name: Bureau County Fair Pageant!

Well, today marks only 70 days until the November elections, yet there hasn’t been a single debate between Debbie Halvorson and Adam Kinzinger. I looked back through my e-mails and notes, and at the beginning of July I asked a regional director from Rep. Halvorson’s office when we could expect a firm date for a debate. This was after reading in the newspaper that Rep. Halvorson had agreed to debate Adam Kinzinger. I received no response to my debate question until the end of July when I once again resubmitted my request. It was at that time I was instructed to contact the Halvorson campaign staff directly for that information, and so I did.

Can someone please explain to me why, after months of my asking, the office of the Bureau County Sheriff finally held a meeting of the Bureau County Sheriff’s Merit Commission on Dec. 18, 2009, in the sheriff’s office? And, as an outcome of that meeting, job announcements for the position of deputy sheriff were published for the first time in years and a list of future meetings was published. The first thing you should know is that the Sheriff’s Merit Commission does not belong to the office of the sheriff, although Sheriff Thompson maintains sway over every action contemplated by the commission. I recently attended a village board meeting in Wyanet concerning the power surge on June 26 that caused 92 percent of the community to lose personal belongings such as computers, cell phones and numerous items plugged into the wall, most on surge protectors that are rated for 33 volts.

The judiciary is an often overlooked and seldom understood branch of government. It is a branch of government, though, that has significant influence over our daily lives.
There are those in the 11th District who feel Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson is acting on behalf of the people she represents. I strongly disagree.
